Hey everybody, this is onscreen offscreen. Sure. We like to talk about our media consumption throughout the week, how it impacts us and how we are, um, impacted by it, I guess is the way Lauren was saying it. I don't know. She does it better than me'cause she's better than me in every single way. Uh, Lauren, with that being said, why don't you get us started with your, with one of your topics.

lauren_4_07-23-2025_182523:Um, this is also, uh, my brother's favorite movie or was when I was, he was in high school. I just remember him watching this on loop. Um, those who haven't seen Hildago, a brief summary is there's kind of like this, uh, cowboy guy. He is part Indian part. Cowboy he has, uh, his horse that, um, it's kinda like the fastest in the west. And he like went with this circus group for a while. Um, but then he finds out like the government's rounding up all these mustangs and is trying to just eliminate them. So he decides to go, um, to this Arabian horse race where like the payout is a hundred thousand. But like people die in this race, it's really dangerous. And uh, horses that aren't Arabic don't go in this race. So him going there, everybody is against him and is mad that he is joining. and it's, has Viggo Mortenson, uh, who plays AORN in, uh, lure the rings and I feel like this character is kind of like a Gore character.'cause he's, he's very gentlemanly in, in the movie and so like props really like Vigo in this movie. Um, where he's like, he is always trying, he's trying to look out for the other racers while he's out there.'cause they're out in this desert and there's really no one that can help them. Um, and so he's out there trying to help people even though they're trying to sabotage him because they don't want a westerner to come and steal their, uh, their thunder. Um, but yeah, this, was always really hard for me to watch this movie with my brother because there's like a lot of horses like get hurt and die in the movie. Not in real life, but in the movie they get hurt and die. And like there's one where his horse like falls into a pit and gets like speared. I. Oh, ugh. It's, it's a tough scene for me. especially'cause like there's the whole, um, understanding that a lot of times, like when horses go lame, they'll just take their horses out because there's not much that they can do for their horse. And the, um, the living, what's that like, the quality of life goes down. So they usually just will take'em out as like a mercy. Um, but actually like going back and rewatching this movie, it is kind of a cool, I think it's, I'm surprised a lot of other people haven't seen it. Uh,'cause it does have like a lot of action things. I think there's even like this one part where he like saves the girl from the bad, uh, people trying to like sell her off and stuff. And, uh, from like these bandit type group. Um, Yeah, I don't know. I, I liked it. It is like kind of the, the hero saves the day, uh, movie. I, I, need to ask my brother why he loved this movie so much, because I don't think that it's good enough to be your absolute favorite rewatch over and over and over. But it was his, so I need to ask him why that is. But yeah, I, I like this movie. Dunno if you guys have seen it, but

Uh, and I've literally just been like listening to the soundtrack since I got out of the theater. Um, heavy spoilers to everybody because I love, I I love this movie so much. Um, it was very hopeful, but there is a very dark scene in this movie surprised me and like Lex Luther, there is not one scene that I am not hating on Lex Luther in this movie. And I love how they made him an an evil son of a gun through and through. And there's this one part where he's doing Russian roulette to try to get information from Superman to this guy who just fed him a falafel one time. And this dude like. He as like, he has the gun up to his head. The guy who has the gun up to his head is like, don't tell him anything Superman. I don't have any friends or family to worry about. It was an honor to serve you my food. And like, when, and then Lex just fricking shoots him. And like, it was so shocking to me when I saw that scene. And like, I, oh, makes me wanna cry. um, then you have like,'cause like Conlin said, I think it was last week, like Superman gets his butt kicked over and over and over in this movie. But then finally once he, like, there's the scene where he catches the building before it crushes the car then he like flies up through like all of the crumbling. So I was like, that is a superhero. Like that is like somebody that you look up to and like the music score. It was so good. And like, it was funny'cause afterwards I turned to my friend Ellie, who watched it with me and I was like, I don't think there's ever been a movie that's made me wanna have a family more than this movie.'cause like his relationship with his parents and like

And he's like, oh my gosh, what does this mean about me? And he like, goes back to like, he was beaten and they took him to go feel better, like with his actual parents and like they were there for him and like his dad was like all mushy for him and stuff. And I was like, this movie is like the best representation I feel like for men as well to like, feel safe about themselves and like. Being able to be emotional about things and not make them feel like it's less manly. Uh, and like just seeing how like all the kids like kept going up to Superman during this movie and stuff, and then at the very end scene when he's like, would you like to see, uh, the video of your parents? It soothes him and it was his like, foster people. Oh my gosh. I started crying. I was like, oh my gosh, this is so wholesome. It's so good. And Superman stands for and, and like, um, with David's Superman. Ugh. Anyway, I just really love this movie. So 10 Easy, 10.

Uh, this is the best Superman we have gotten. Uh, my big problem with Man of Steel was it was trying to be Batman. Batman's supposed to be the exception, not the rule. Um, I've seen people talking about this movie saying, yay, no more dark and gritty DC or superhero stuff. We're moving on from that and I'm, I'm on the side. That's like, okay, but like accept Batman. Like Batman needs to be dark and gritty. So like you need to have that. We can't just have. You can't just see the success of this and be like, okay, now we need a bright colored, purple suited Batman running around. No, we got that in the nineties. It didn't work then. It's not gonna work now. Um,

Um, the trajectory of both Kryptonite and Superman to get to Earth is so astronomically small that it's insane. Um, I give it props because it's bold for them not to do an origin story for their, like they're rekick the DC universe and they're doing it without doing an origin story. Bold choice. I believe it was a good choice that paid off. Um. Visually and the soundtrack of this, it is phenomenal. It looks great. Uh, the cinematography of him coming out of the building was absolutely great. Um, my problems with this movie are, I'm gonna start with Lois Lane. Um, she's horrible person. Um, she's a nagging girlfriend who's basically like, you can't do anything, right, ever. Um, uh, absolutely irritated me. It really bothered me that she was like, I was gonna break up with him. And then he said, I love you, and I didn't feel like the right time. And then the next time they're together, she's like, I love you too. I'm like, why did, you change your mind? You didn't interact with him a single time and you can't go from, I'm going to break up with you to, I love you. Like that. That is horrible. You're a manipulative, horrible person. I really hate you. LOEs Lane. I really, really hate you. Um, her writing buddy plays young Sean in psych and I could not not see that. So I saw a 13-year-old hitting on a prostitute and I was like, this whole thing is uncomfortable to me. I understand that. I am one of very few people who even know who that is, but like, I genuinely really like that actor. He's in a bunch of stuff I've seen, uh, he does a way, way back. He does a show called Vacation, um, with, uh, what's it, he, it plays Andy in the office. Um, like I really like that actor. but he hasn't aged at all. And so all I see is 13-year-old Sean hitting on a prostitute, and it made me incredibly uncomfortable. I was like, he's way too young for this way, way too young for, and she looks like 30. Um, so that whole point made me really uncomfortable. Um, there was some comic booky weirdness, uh, that I can excuse, but I didn't like, like I didn't like the monkeys. Um,

Um, just kind of dumb stuff like that, that I can nitpick, um, hands down is the best superman we've ever gotten. But I will not rewatch this ever again. Um, I still didn't like it overall. Um, and I think that the breaking point is, Lois Lane. Um, I think her character's inconsistent and I think she's just a terrible human being. High points are Lex Luther already spoken about, is great. Absolutely fantastic. Lex Luther, um, absolutely fantastic Superman, but it's Superman. Superman's kind of a dumb hero and. His love interest, which I like in everything else that I see her in because she does play a important role, is just done horribly here.

He's like, I don't care about all of this crap because I was just saving people. He's like, I don't see agendas, I don't see these things. I saw people in danger and I saved them. That's all I saw. And, um. Like, like when he was like, but you know, that's silly. Or whatever, because like they, it didn't show the scene of them, like having these conversations as, as Lois and Clark. Um, and so then when she switched into reporter mode and he was Superman, didn't mesh well. And I don't think, um, I did hate the fact that like, after that little bit she's like, this isn't gonna work out. And like, wanted to break up because of the interview. I think I would've liked Lois better if, if they had, if they kept that scene of her, like pushing Superman with that and her being kind of a jerk and then like later her being like, Hey, you know, like. not that it's an excuse or whatever, but her being like, Hey, that's like my reporter kicked in and I, I don't know how to separate reporter from relationship and we need to work on that aspect instead of just trying to like cut it off. So like, I can see both of your guys' points and I think I'm in the middle because I'm not a fan Superman in, in this lowest lane. Um, I think he could do much better, um, because yeah, I feel like she was a little too flaky. And then I also thought that it was, um, that line now that you brought it back up. I did hate when she was like, I was gonna break up with him, but then he said he loved me. I forgot about that and I remember hating that when I watched that. Um,

And like I love that that aspect of like, it was showing like how Superman cares where other superheroes are. Like, ah, yeah, this is a paycheck, or Oh yeah, this is, for like public image or whatever, where it's like Superman's like, I want to help the people and this squirrel and this dog and I wanna help everything. It's not the best Superman family. I would give that to Smallville.

The big, one of my biggest problems of this show is the side characters that they bring in for one episode because they're like, I get to act once, and there's this girl who. She gets brought a burger and it is like the greatest thing that's ever happened. She's like, oh, it's a burger. She, she's just so happy and a lot of the side characters who deliver their lines are like, genuinely terrible and pull me outta the show. Like really worst. Some of the worst side characters, guest episode, people I have ever seen in the show ever. Like really, really bad. But of your main actors and actresses do a good job. My other big problem with the show is I don't buy Nancy and her dad being, uh, it being her dad. I don't know why, but the entire show, it just doesn't feel like her dad. Um, and like you very clearly in one of like the first scenes, there's like a dog, uh, chasing and barking and you can see where they paused the dog's body, but then like neck up, you saw the dog like bark its head move and it almost was a different color than the body because you could tell that they had, the dog's body was now on the background and they only had the head be the animation. Um, and so. There was a lot of that that I saw throughout, um, the movie. And like, I, I was like, oh, I did that animation trick and my teacher was so mad at me. Like, so, um, do think that they over complicated the character designs the hair, um, for both of the girls, I think was way complicated. Um, and they could have just like, eased that a little bit better. Um, the horse, like for the unicorn, the unicorn kept like always, like her head was everywhere and I did not like it. It was very distracting to me when she was the unicorn. Um, and like there was a lot of, um, stuff that I noticed with the hair specifically that when she, the rest of her wasn't moving, her hair wouldn't move, but then as soon as she would move her hair was. Flowing gorgeously, but then I was like, her hair would be flowing gorgeously all the time.'cause there, there's wind right now. But if she wasn't moving specifically at that moment with her body or her head, her hair wouldn't move. so like the animation could have been better. I think the style was very gorgeous if it was like, if they had the technology of now. and as long as like, as far as like the story and stuff, I hadn't read the book and I, this is like my first time knowing it, but I've seen a whole bunch of, uh, TikTok things where she gets like, turned into the princess and she's like, I feel my body dying. And like, I've seen all like the tiktoks being like me in my twenties and stuff. So it was nice to finally get the context of that. Um. I kind of found the romance with the prince weird. and it felt like a, oh, there's a prince and a unicorn. So of course they're, they have to get together. And then this is a king, but where is everybody else? It was just him and the prince. There was no one else. It was like, I was like, what is he king of? Like I was, that explained. Did I miss that? Did everybody like run away? Why is he alone in this? Like it was just him and the prince that whole time. And I didn't know if that was,'cause you know, they didn't wanna animate a whole bunch of randos. But, um, yeah, I thought it was okay. I probably liked it better than you did. I thought it was very interesting watching the old animation. Uh, I always find that very interesting to like watch. So, not necessarily bad, but interesting.

Like the opening scene with the forest, I think the forest looks fan fantastic and they ride in on the horses and they give their lines of dialogue. I thought the horses and specifically the two people looked really, really good. And then you see the unicorn and that is the ugliest freaking unicorn. Ever. And I remember very specifically, the unicorn like turns to look at the camera and it's like there's a hole in its face. And I was like, who drew that? And who said that was okay. Oh my gosh, that looks horrible. Like why does the background look so good? And you spent five minutes on your character. I don't understand this. Other than that, I agree with Conlin largely. Like the story is fine, I guess the characters are fine, I guess. I really didn't like it. I had to watch it three times because I kept falling asleep. So, yeah, for me it's a three out of 10. I really had to force myself through it and I just can't give anything higher.
